Important Developments in the History of Tarot Reading

There is a lot of theory, however, that holds that this early tarot was a game, not a tool for divination. It was not until the late 1700s that there were any indications of the tarot being used in a more powerful way. It is said that a man named De Gelen saw the tarot being played as a game and instantly saw a greater symbolism to the cards. His occult interests combined with this vision and began the evolution of the modern tarot, which continued over about two hundred years. Incidentally, it was in the late 1800s that the Gypsies made their mark on the tarot by publishing a book called The Tarot of the Bohemians. That is why many people today think of Gypsy fortune tellers reading tarot cards.

The next major step linked the Tarot to the Kabalah, because there were 22 trumps in the tarot deck and 22 letters in the Hebrew alphabet.
